Cartridges filters should be replaced every year. Also, dip the cartridge filters overnight in a strong solution of trisodium phosphate.
How to Clean Pool Filter Cartridge (Step-by-Step Guide)
Let's jump into the step by step guide on how to make this process a success.
What you need:
- Spray nozzle
- Garden hose
- Filter cleaner
- If required, replacement filter cartridge and replacement O-ring
Remove filter cartridge from filter tank
Here is your step as you begin cleaning the filter. In some cases, some filters have several filters; there the need to separate them from individuals. There is a filter cartridge that operates automatically with the aid of a timer. Therefore, you need to turn off the pump before removing the filter.
Equally important, the inlet valves, together with the outlet valves, should be closed. The clamp is usually held by a bolt. This bolt is removed using a socket of about 19mm in size. After removing the bolt, you may find the clamp stuck. So here you are required to use a rubber mallet in order to have the clamp loosened.
Blush the filters
Once you have your filter out, have the filters rinsed. You need to make use of a garden hose for the rinsing and strictly avoid using pressure washers. As you flush the filters, you need to be cautious in order to avoid damages to the filters. So, ensure you are maintaining an angle of 45 degrees.
Having this in place, the debris will be flushed out from the pleats and still have your filter in the right condition. If you are experiencing a challenge cleaning the filter, use a soft brush to remove the debris from the pleated area. You should be careful in case you decide to make use of a brush.
Immerse the filters in Trisodium phosphate solution
Here, you need to have a bucket filled with water and a TSP solution. You can have the trisodium solution with an approximation of one cup. Now have your filters submerged into the solution and leave it for a minimum of three hours.
Otherwise, you may use a TSP substitute. Lukewarm water and a cup of dishwasher detergent can be used. The dishwasher detergent for the machine is far different from the dishwashing for hand cleaning. You may, therefore, compare their capabilities and go for the one that suits you. Lastly, rinse the filters to have any stacked debris removed.
Clean the filter tank
While the filters are submerged in the TSP solution that can be your good chance to have the filter tank cleaned. Through the drain, now flush out the accumulated dirt. You can use the TSP solution whereby you pour it inside the tank for a perfect wash. Remember also to clean the outside part of the housing.
Then, fill the filter housing with water. This is to enable the degreaser function, and you can use a wooden rod to stir and have it dissolved in water. Thereafter, now drain out the fluid and seal the tank to let the pump circulate.
Wash the filters using muriatic acid wash
For a perfect filter, make use of muriatic acid. Before you soak the filters in the acid, you need to make sure that no oils or cleaning solutions are stuck on the filters. This is to ensure that your filters are not damaged since permanent damages may occur.
If required, you’ll have to purchase another filter for replacement. Therefore always take precautions. The filters should remain submerged until the bubbling stops. Now you can take them off and rinse them with a lot of water. Make sure you use gloves and safety glasses.
Clean the seals
Just as you had the filters cleaned, their seals also need to be cleaned. They as well would be deteriorated even though usable. Once you have them cleaned, they need to be lubricated. Here you are advised to use silicone paste and strictly not grease.
This would help in sealing and also have them in a better condition. Additionally, silicone paste is of importance since leaks are avoided, and also you won't have to replace that.
Re-assemble the housing
Now it's the time to have the cartridges placed back in the filter. This is achieved by reinstalling the clamp and tightening the bolt. If the need arises, you can as well lubricate the bolts for a perfect tightening. At this point, the filtration system is turned on. There's the need to open the valve responsible for releasing the excess air from the tank.
For you to know when the excess air is all released, the valve should remain open until when water flows out through the valve. If a need arises, you can have the filter pressure recalibrated. Finally, you have your filter cartridge in order!
Tips and Tricks
To maintain the pol filter cartridge, take precautions before dipping to any chemical. Always remember the chemicals are added to water and not having water added to the chemicals. This will keep the filter's condition in place and not alter it while being submerged in the chemical.
Keep the container of the acid sealed. It should be tightly sealed and ready for re-use. Once the solution is well mixed, you can make use of it many times. This would be effective as long as the lid is tightly sealed and stored at a safe place. Putting this in order will maintain the effectiveness of the chemicals and ready for reuse.
Avoid pressure washing on the filters. With high pressure, the fibers can easily break. This typically renders the filter useless since it cannot be of use with the deformation. Therefore, you are recommended to use a garden hose pipe while cleaning the filters.
